And now we know why Jhon became king and why he’s so obsessed with seeing Demilia safe: she’s the only relative he has left that he can acknowledge without throwing the monarchy he inherited by default into chaos.
A Billy Idol reference and A Game of Thrones reference in one sentence! I’m impressed!
The wedding certainly has played a part in making the King an overprotective father.
Ironically, the King considers Gareth to be unworthy to marry his daughter while conveniently forgetting the kind of man he was at Gareth’s age.
Maybe that’s actually part of it. Jhon probably suffers some form of survivor’s guilt because he wasn’t there to save his family. Looking back at himself then, I’d be surprised if he didn’t feel his daughter needed someone who would always be there for her and keep her safe, whereas Gareth looks unimpressive and bards are known for loving and leaving the ladies.
By the way, nice Robin Hood-reference! ^_^ Prince John, generally considered the lesser brother, who gained power in his more respected brother’s absence.
Survivor’s guilt is a factor to some degree along with the realization that kingdoms are fragile and the status quo can change quickly and unexpectedly.
Another factor is that in the decades since then, Jhon has grown (unexpectedly) to be a wise and benevolent king and his success has given him a bit of an ego.
When he looks back on his youth, he sees himself as a young man who avoided a civil war and unified the kingdom(more on that next page) and not as an unambitious, hard-drinking, womanizer.
Well, technically he’s right.
He avoided the civil war by ducking into the brothel, andseeing as there were no other royals left alive but the unification treaty in effect, he was the figurehead of the new, unified kingdom! :p
Actually, Jhon managed to avoid another(possibly more terrible) war and established a legitimate kingdom in his own right with some quick thinking and a little luck, but I won’t say too much about it, since we’ll find out exactly how he managed it on the next page. 😉
KIng Jhon is one hedonistic hypocritical cowardly whore with a short attention span all of a sudden Gareth seems to be more worthy than the King douche bro. Maybe King Jhon lack of responsibility, low attention span and being horny have something to do with the battle he missed. Demilia better off with the kind hearted gentle hack than her douche father.
Man, this is straight out of old viking history.
Like that one time when they partied a bit too hard, and accidentally chopped off a bishops head ? Luckily the English provided a new bishop when they asked for another one. 😀
It’s a bad day for a… red wedding. 🙁

Actually I hadn’t thought of Robin Hood when I named the character, but I wish I had been that clever!

Ah. Something to look forward to! ^_^

The artstyle in this comic reminds me of the Diskworld Covers made by Josh Kirby.
Thank you!
I’ve seen Kirby’s work and that’s quite a compliment.

Must have been quite a conversation when they had to explain why they needed a new bishop! AWKWARD!
“Uh… Shaving accident while drunk KTHXBYE!”
LOL!
Another reason why people shouldn’t be allowed to bring their weapons to a wedding….
Yep, some people just can’t keep their sword to themselves. 😉
